1. Introduction

Objective: Understand the StarBand 480 Pro and StarBand 481 Telecommuter product offerings and differences between current and new products and offerings.

Overview of the StarBand 480 Pro and StarBand 481 Telecommuter

The StarBand 480 Pro is available for small office customers and the StarBand Model 481 Telecommuter is available for telecommuter customers. Together they are the foundation of StarBand's 4th generation two-way, always-on, high-speed Internet service. offering many great benefits:

  • Faster Upload Speeds - 100 kbps uploads in Turbo Mode. Most large file transfers will benefit from Turbo Mode upload speeds. Small files easily uploaded in less than 10 seconds likely will not be sent in Turbo Mode.


  • Faster Download Speeds – The StarBand 480 Pro supports file download speeds of up to 1Mbps, which the StarBand 481 Telecommuter offering supports file download speeds of up to 750 kbps.


  • 4-port Ethernet Router on the StarBand 480 Pro - A 4-port Ethernet router (no firewall functionality included) is built into the modem. Networking computers is easy - simply connect up to four Computers (Small Office Only) to the modem. The StarBand 481 Telecommuter comes with a single ethernet port.


  • Compatible with More Operating Systems - Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Unix, and most TCP/IP supported operating systems work with the StarBand 480 Pro and StarBand 481 Telecommuter system. However, StarBand Call Center support is limited to Windows and Macintosh OS 9 and OS X operating systems.


  • Simpler/Faster Installation - No USB 'driver' conflicts and all mandatory software built into the modem (Communications Center and troubleshooting software should still be installed on customer's PC if possible).


  • Static IP Address(es) - StarBand 480 Pro Small Office service comes with one static IP address; three additional static IPs can be purchased for $19.99/mo. StarBand 481 Telecommuter service is available with one dynamic IP address; one static IP address can be purchased for $4.99/mo.

IMPORTANT Installation Limitations
  • StarBand 480 Pro and 481 systems may now be installed on BOTH Telstar-7 (129°) and AMC-4 (101°); please note that this is a change from the initial StarBand 480 Pro offering which was only available on Telstar-7. Service on Telstar-7 is currently only available on Vertical Polarity.


  • The StarBand 480 Pro and 481 Telecommuter services are available ONLY for new customers; upgrades will be available soon.


  • The StarBand 481 Telecommuter service may be installed ONLY in residential locations. All commercial locations must purchase the StarBand 480 Pro 7Small Office service.
